DAY TRIPS (Closing date: 1 April 2008)
Much to our regret we had to cancel all day tours because only a couple people were interested in joining a tour.
We would be happy to organize a city tour of Leipzig at short notice.
If you are interested, please send an email to Kristin Bätzel at kbaetzel@eventlab.org.

Dresden: Saxony’s Crowning Glory
Thursday, 1 May 2008

Dresden, the capital of Saxony, is doubtless one of the most splendid cities in Germany – so much so that listing all its sights is too much for many tour brochures!
Your coach will set off from Leipzig for Dresden at about 10:00 am. The initial two-hour guided tour will take in the main sights in the city’s charming old town, from Zwinger Palace and the Semper Opera House to the Hofkirche Roman Catholic Church, the Procession of Princes fresco and Brühl’s Terrace. At lunchtime, you’ll sample some typical Saxon cuisine at Sophienkeller, a unique restaurant in a historical vault.
The next part of the programme will be a visit to the Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche) – one of the foremost and most magnificent structures dating back to the High Baroque period. The return journey will start at 3:30 pm, so you should be back in Leipzig by 5:30 pm.
Price per person: 60.00 EUR (incl. 19% VAT)
(including tour guide, lunch and all admission fees but excluding drinks)
Minimum number of participants: 60
Weimar: Town of Writers and Thinkers
Friday, 2 May 2008
Well over a thousand years old, Weimar is famous as the town of Germany’s great writers and thinkers. And with its extensive parks and palaces, it’s also a centre of culture with enormous international appeal.
You’ll set off for Weimar from The Westin Hotel together with a guide at about 9:00 am. On arrival, the tour will start with a thematic guided walk focusing on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Frederick Schiller – probably Germany’s most famous writers. You’ll visit the historical centre, including the marketplace, Weimar Palace, Liszt House, the Bauhaus University and Schiller House. The tour will end at the cemetery containing Schiller’s und Goethe’s tomb.
For lunch, you’ll sample the local traditional cuisine, including Thuringian potato dumplings and red cabbage. Thus fortified, you’ll then head off for Goethe House – the illustrious writer’s home for nearly fifty years. The day’s highlight will be a guided tour of the German National Theatre, including a look behind the scenes.
The return journey to Leipzig will start at about 4:00 pm.
Price per person: 55.00 EUR (incl. 19% VAT)
(including tour guide, lunch and all admission fees but excluding drinks)
Minimum number of participants: 30
Potsdam: Prussia's Glory
Friday, 2 May 2008
The guide will collect you at the hotel at about 9:30 am. After a coach journey taking about two hours, your tour of Potsdam will commence at Cecilienhof Palace. During a professional guided tour of the palace, you’ll also have an opportunity to explore the enchanting grounds. After a short walk, you’ll arrive at the Meierei restaurant for a two-course lunch. Back on the coach, the sightseeing tour will take in the Russian Colony, the Neubabelsberg villas, Glienicker Bridge, Babelsberg Palace and the historical old town. The highlight of the day will be a guided tour of the magnificent Sanssouci Palace and the gardens surrounding it, during which you’ll be able to admire the lovingly tended grounds and buildings, including the orangery and the New Palace. You’ll arrive back in Leipzig at around 6:00 pm.

Leipzig: Musical Heritage
Saturday, 3 May 2008

This tour will examine music in Leipzig over the ages, including the lives and works of J.S. Bach and other great composers. Our guide will meet you at The Westin Hotel at about 9:30 am. The tour will start with a stroll through the area known as the Composers’ Quarter to Mendelssohn House. You’ll naturally have a look around what for many years was the home of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Then you’ll walk through the city of Leipzig with stops at St Nicholas Church, Old City Hall and the Mädler-Passage with the famous Auerbach’s Cellar to the destination Zum Arabischen Coffebaum – a museum dedicated to the history of coffee with its own restaurant. You’ll have lunch there. Bearing in mind Bach’s Coffee Cantata, appropriately enough the next item on the programme is a part of the Bach Museum!
Afterwards you’ll cross the yard to St Thomas’s Church. Still home to the world-famous St Thomas’s Boys Choir, this is the place where Bach worked for 27 years – and you’ll have an opportunity to see his gravestone.
After a short walk to Augustusplatz, the centre of music in Leipzig since it is home to both the Gewandhaus concert hall and Leipzig Opera House you will have a guided tour of Gewandhaus, with a look behind the scenes.
The tour will finish back at the hotel at about 2:30 pm.
Price per person: 45.00 EUR (incl. 19% VAT)
(including tour guide, lunch and all admission fees but excluding drinks)
