POST-CONFERENCE EXCURSION (Closing date: 1 April 2008)

Post-conference excursion
An exciting day at the Leipzig New Lake District
(Leipziger Neuseenland)
Sunday, 4 May 2008

A huge area of the Leipzig region is being converted at the largest landscape construction site in Europe. About 15 years ago, the area had been one of the most industrialised ones and used to be characterized by mining and industry. Within a period of 25 years, a rehabilitated and newly landscaped area with many lakes is being reshaped. A 70 square kilometres large lake district with a total of 19 lakes is planned.
A guide will give you a tour of the fascinating countryside to the overburden heap “Halde Trages” and you will receive information about flora and fauna as well as about the restoration of the brown coal region. You will also enjoy the stunning views from a 33m high tower.

The “Ritterhof” at the youngest village in the Federal State of Saxony – Dreiskau-Muckern - will be the perfect place to enjoy a delicious lunch. The visitor centre of the New Lake District is also located here.
